Weatherford jumps to the big league
In 1997, Weatherford International commissioned John de Wardt to undertake worldwide interviews of company personnel in all divisions and incorporate these results into his strategy development program. A six day workshop that included 110 participants developed many initiatives designed to reach the challenge made by the CEO - double revenues profitable with in 5 years. These initiatives were detailed out by teams after the workshop and summed up to show that a course could be followed to grow the company from $500 million to $ 1 billion. Simultaneously, the workshop group foresaw the significant mergers that could occur in the oil service industry that prompted Weatherford to accept a merger offer from Enterra and maintain itself in the big league.
John has continued to support Weatherford in a number of strategic planning areas relating to new growth businesses: intervention services, under balanced services and expandable services.

The application of Lean Drilling to the Norwegian operations of bp, TotalFinaElf, Statoil and Saga (now Norske Hydro) has differentiated the drilling performance of these operators when compared to their internal and external peers. With daily drilling costs in this region ranging from $150,000 to $350,000, the savings achieved are worth many millions of dollars. The plot on the left presented to the AADC in Houston on November 13, 2001 shows the step change achieved by bp Norway in comparison to their regional peers. The plot on the right shows how the clients of DE WARDT AND COMPANY achieved the best performance on a comparison of depth versus time for all Norwegian deep-water exploration wells.

A heavy engineering fabrication shop was reorganized with improved techniques that increased weld metal lay down time as well as a devoted material preparation area. The result was an immediate 50% improvement in throughput.
