John de Wardt, in the role of Program Chairman for SPE Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section, has organized a Drilling Systems Automation panel session at SPE ATCE in Denver, Oct 30th; a series of exciting automation perspectives presentations at IADC / SPE Drilling conference San Diego March 5th 2012 and an SPE workshop on "Step Change in Drilling Systems Automation" mid 2012 in the USA.

A "Design to Build" process improvement program cut the manufacturing time of very large diameter heavy tar sands processing vessels by 27% with an aggressive goal to continue the reduction.
Fabrication Shop Increases Throughput 50%
A heavy engineering fabrication shop was reorganized with improved techniques that increased weld metal lay down time as well as a devoted material preparation area. The result was an immediate 50% improvement in throughput.
